Penny Shortage: Rounding Cash Payments

Due to recent changes at the federal level, the U.S. has stopped producing new pennies. Because of this, many banks are limiting or completely discontinuing penny change orders. As a result, some restaurants may run out of pennies for making change.

honeygrow uses a neutral rounding system. For cash payments, we round the final amount up or down to the nearest nickel when pennies are unavailable.

 

Post this sign at cash/POS so it is visible to guests.

 

When pennies are unavailable, for cash payment amounts ending in:

  •  1¢, 2¢, 6¢, or 7¢: Round DOWN to the nearest nickel
  • 3¢, 4¢, 8¢, or 9¢: Round UP to the nearest nickel

 

 

How to round amounts in Toast for cash payments:

  1. Tap on the guest’s order.
  2. Tap Update.
  3. Tap Cash Adjustments.
  4. Depending on the amount, tap either the -1 Cent or +1 Cent button.
    • If the amount ends in 1 or 6, tap -1 Cent once.
    • If the amount ends in 2 or 7, tap - 1 Cent twice.
    • If the amount ends in 4 or 9, tap +1 Cent once.
    • If the amount ends in 3 or 8, tap +1 Cent twice.
  5. When you’ve reached a number that ends in zero or five, tap “Pay.”
  6. Collect the guest’s payment.
